How to Set Up an Outdoor Toilet While Camping

Materials Needed
Portable toilet or composting toilet
Privacy tent or tarp
Shovel
Toilet paper
Hand sanitizer
Trash bags

Step 1: Choose a Suitable Location

Selecting the right location for your outdoor toilet is essential. Find a spot away from high-traffic areas to ensure privacy. Also, consider the proximity to your campsite and water sources. The toilet should be at least 200 feet away from any water source to prevent contamination.

Step 2: Set Up a Tent or Tarp

Erect a privacy tent or set up a tarp around the designated area. This will not only provide privacy but also help keep the toilet area dry in case of rain.

Step 3: Dig a Hole

Use a shovel to dig a hole at least 6–8 inches deep. Ensure that the hole is far enough from water sources (at least 200 feet away) to prevent pollution. If you prefer, you can use a portable toilet or composting toilet instead of digging a hole.

Step 4: Place the Toilet

Position the portable or composting toilet over the hole or in the designated area. Before using, make sure it is stable and secure to avoid accidents.

Step 5: Stock Up on Supplies

Ensure you have enough toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and trash bags readily available. This will help maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the area.

Step 6: Proper Waste Disposal

After using the toilet, dispose of waste properly. If using a portable toilet, empty its contents at a designated waste disposal site. If using a dug-out hole, cover the waste with soil and fill the hole completely when finished.

Additional Tips
Use biodegradable toilet paper to minimize environmental impact.
Do not dispose of feminine hygiene products or wet wipes in the toilet.
Regularly clean the portable or composting toilet to prevent odors and maintain hygiene.
Setting up an outdoor toilet at your campsite can enhance your camping experience by adding convenience and comfort. By following these simple steps, you can create a functional and hygienic outdoor bathroom, making your camping trip more enjoyable.
